How to choose the right wall frames

Choosing a frame doesn't just start with the design you like. Before you buy, you need to think about what you want to frame, how much wall space you have available, and what role you want the frame to play in the overall decor.

Start with size 

Image size is the first practical criterion. For smaller photos or prints, dimensions such as 30x40 cm or 40x50 cm work very well alone or in small compositions. For a larger wall, a 50x70 cm or 70x100 cm picture frame can act as a basic reference point.

A useful rule of thumb is for the frame to cover about 2/3 of the width of the furniture below it. Above a 2-meter sofa, for example, a 70x100 cm frame or a composition with a total width of 120–140 cm looks balanced, while a single 30x40 frame is "lost". Conversely, a very large picture frame on a narrow wall makes the space look cluttered.

Choose the right material

Wood is one of the most versatile options. Natural oak shades add warmth and are particularly suitable for Scandinavian, minimal and Japandi spaces, while dark shades create greater contrast and a more graphic effect. The profile also matters: a thin 15mm profile looks discreet and lets the image take center stage, while a 20mm gives more 'presence' to large sizes.

Don't ignore color

The frame does not necessarily have to "match" the furniture or the wall perfectly. It can also act as a contrasting element.

On a white or very light colored wall, a black frame creates a clean, modern effect. Natural wood is more subtle and adds warmth, while a green, blue or terracotta frame can become the color accent of a more playful composition. 

The important thing is that the color of the frame is connected to some other element of the space: a pillow, a carpet, a lamp or even a detail inside the poster.

Single frame or gallery wall?

A large picture frame works as a statement piece, especially above a sofa, bed or console. Many smaller frames give more freedom for a personal gallery wall.

A safe recipe for a 2.5–3 meter wall: start with one 50x70 cm frame in the center and add 4–6 smaller ones (30x40 and 40x50 cm) around it. Leave 5–10 cm between the frames so that the composition remains legible without looking strict.

Not all frames need to be the same. You can combine natural wood with black or add a colored frame as a point of interest. What makes composition look purposeful is a common element: same material, same frame color or common color palette in the images. If using different sizes, repeat at least one dimension for visual continuity.

Where to place the wall frames 

Mounting height is just as important as size. As a general rule, the center of an artwork is at about eye level, around 145–155 cm from the floor. Above furniture, usually leave a gap of about 15–25 cm so that the frame visually connects to the furniture without looking stuck to it.

On a large, empty wall, opt for a larger frame or a well-organized composition instead of many small objects scattered around the space. And before drilling the wall, test the composition with papers cut to the dimensions of the frames. It is the easiest way to check the overall result.
