Ceramic vases: a selection guide for height, shape and style

Κεραμικά βάζα: οδηγός επιλογής για ύψος, σχήμα και στιλ

A ceramic vase is chosen based on the size, shape, finish and style of the space. To look right with the rest of your decor, it needs to have the right proportions with the furniture where it will be placed and work harmoniously with the other materials, colors and objects around it.

From a small vase on a shelf to a large sculptural vase standing alone on a console, the choice is not just a matter of aesthetics. Height, diameter, texture and color can change your entire. In our collection, you will find ceramic vases from 101 Copenhagen, Broste Copenhagen and other Scandinavian design houses, in different sizes, shapes and shades.

How to choose the right ceramic vase

Before you choose a vase just by its shape, think first about where it will be placed. A small vase that looks pretty on a shelf can get lost on a large console, while a bulky ceramic vase can make a small side table look cluttered.

Three items are worth considering first: the height and proportions, the material and finish, and the style of the vase in relation to the space.

Start from the height

Height is perhaps the most important practical criterion. For small shelves, bedside tables or small surfaces, a ceramic vase about 10–20 cm high is usually enough. For a console, a sideboard or a larger table, you can go to heights of 24–36 cm, while for a more intense decorative effect there are also larger options.

For example, the Alma Sand Reactive Glazed by Broste Copenhagen it is 11 cm in diameter and only 10 cm high, so it works easily on small surfaces or in a composition with other objects.

In contrast, a 30–36 cm tall vase has enough presence to function as a centerpiece on a console or sideboard. The Cori Off White by Broste Copenhagen is 36 cm tall and more generous dimensions, and is also available in smaller version 24 cm high.

A simple rule for proportions

When you place a vase on a piece of furniture, don't just look at its height but also its volume. A tall and thin vase creates a vertical line and draws the eye upwards, while a low and wide vase has a more sculptural and "fixed" character.

If you want to create a composition with two or more objects, prefer different heights instead of objects that are all on the same horizontal line. A tall vase, a lower bowl and a small decoration create more movement and depth.

Ceramic, matte or glossy?

Ceramic has a great advantage in decoration: it can completely change character depending on its finish.

Matte surfaces have a calmer and architectural presence. They are particularly suited to minimal, Japandi and Scandinavian spaces, where materials and textures play an important role.

Glazed ceramics, on the other hand, have greater color and visual variation. The surface is not perfectly even and this gives the object more depth and a more handcrafted feel. The Cori Off White Reactive Glazed is a typical example: the off-white shade remains neutral, while the reactive glazed surface adds texture.

Choose a shape according to the style you want

The shape of a ceramic vase is what often defines its character more than the color.

Organic curves

If you want a softer and sculptural effect, look for vases with curves and asymmetrical forms. Organic shapes work particularly well in contemporary spaces with natural materials, wood and earth tones.

Geometric forms

For a more architectural effect, prefer clean lines, symmetrical shapes and sharp edges. A geometric vase can function almost like a small sculpture, even without flowers.

Sculptural vases

There are vases that don't need flowers at all. They are designed more as art objects than traditional flower pots and can be the focal point of an arrangement.

How to choose the color

The color of the vase can work in two different ways: either to integrate into the color palette of the room or to create a controlled contrast.

Off-white, beige and gray shades are easy to integrate into neutral spaces and work as a continuation of natural materials. Terracotta and brown tones add warmth, while brighter colors can be used as an accent.

However, the vase does not have to be exactly the same color as another object. As long as there is a color affinity. A terracotta detail on the vase can, for example, be repeated in a book, a work of art or a small decoration.

How to place a ceramic vase in the space

A vase does not always have to be in the center of a surface. It can be placed slightly to one side and balanced with a second, lower object.

On a console, try a taller vase alongside two smaller objects. In one coffee table, a low and wide ceramic vase can work better than a very tall one so it doesn't block the line of sight.

For one shelf, prefer smaller dimensions and create different levels with books, candles or other decorations. The point is not to fill the surface, but to create a balance between heights, textures and empty space.

Frequently asked questions about ceramic vases

What height of ceramic vase is suitable for a console?

For a console or a dining table, a vase of about 24–36 cm can have enough presence without taking up the entire surface. For smaller consoles, prefer a shorter height and a longer base only if you want a more sculptural effect.

Which ceramic vase fits in a minimal space?

Simple forms, neutral shades and matte or subtle reactive glazed finishes work easily in minimal spaces. Off-white, beige, gray and natural tones can be incorporated without creating a strong contrast.

Can I use a ceramic vase without flowers?

Of course. Many contemporary ceramic vases are designed as sculptural objects and can function independently. The more special the form, the less extra stuff it needs around it.

How do I combine two or more jars?

Combine different heights and shapes, but keep a common element, such as a color palette or the same material. A tall vase together with a lower and wider one usually creates more visual balance than two objects of the same size.

Are all ceramic jars suitable for water?

No. Some Hintsdeco decorative ceramic vases are not 100% waterproof and come with a special bag for fresh flowers. Before adding water, always check the instructions of the specific product.
