How to decorate the shelves in your living room

Πως να διακοσμήσεις τα ράφια στο σαλόνι σου

In addition to their practical use, shelves can change the interior design of a room. When we try to decorate our shelves, we often don’t know where to start. The perfect decoration, the right placement, the aesthetic are some of the criteria we have in mind. We try to not overload them, but also to not leave them empty.

When we talk about decorating the living room shelves, it must be in line with the aesthetic of the space and to create pleasant and calming emotions. If we try to fit a lot of unnecessary items on the shelves, the result will look untidy which can cause stress.

Let's take a look at some hints on how to decorate our shelves, the right way.

The different types of shelves

First, let's talk about the different types of shelves. When it comes to living room shelves there are many interesting options.

A bookcase is one of the most classic options. It can be easily integrated into your space and cover the practical needs of book storage, while at the same time it is easily decorated as it has a lot of space.

In case there is no need for a lot of storage space, a small shelving unit is a good replacement. There are very interesting vintage options for this furniture.

Corner shelves are a modern solution, ideal for small spaces. You can take advantage of the height of the corner by placing many corner shelves.

Floating shelves can create a minimal, clean look in the space.

I have already mentioned room dividers with shelves in the article Μake your rented house feel like home: 10 hints. You can use them, to separate a space, creating a sense of privacy and by choosing one with shelves, you can increase the vertical storage space.

Finally, a new, quite modern option is the shelves for picture frames. They have a shallow space for placing frames which you can alternate at any time creating a new look.

Playing with different heights

We can create a very interesting style on our shelves by combining items with many different heights, mixing and matching with smaller and larger items. Place some books vertically and some horizontally to give layers to your shelves. Place a decor item on a stack of books to take advantage of the space in a different way.

When organizing the different heights, place the statement pieces in a way to bring the eyesight on the higher shelves. Start by placing your largest items such as frames, sculptures, and bowls, and then frame them with smaller, more general decor items such as boxes, baskets, candles, etc.

Think about the available space

As we have already said, it is important not to overdo it or get carried away by placing a lot of items on our shelves. Calculate your space and organize your decoration based on it. We can place and remove, mix and match items from our shelves to see how we like them.

Home accessories work quite well in odd numbers, especially threes. So it's a good idea to arrange your decorations in triads of different heights before placing them on your shelves.

Finally, don’t be afraid to leave space empty! You don’t need to fill every corner.

Decorate based on the material

Think about the material of the items that you will use to decorate your shelves. You can create an interesting look if you play with many different materials and textures such as rattan baskets, metal vases, and lamps, mirrors with wooden frames, etc. Before you go into the process of buying all these decorations, go around the rooms of your house and see what you can find. You will be amazed at how many options this technique will give you. As you decorate your shelves, you may feel that something "small and metallic" may be missing from one corner and then find a small, forgotten box from your kitchen.

As with the different heights, here too, you can mix and match with different materials to see what works best for you.

Think about the color

Like with the height and the material, the color of your items is a factor worth considering. You can rely on the colors of your living room to guide you. Play with similar shades, or in case the palette of the space is too neutral, bring the color with your decor items.

If you have enough colorful objects that you want to use, it would be good to add some neutral tones to tone down your palette.

You can create a completely neutral, minimal style by placing your books with their backs to the wall and combining them with white, beige, and camel items.

At the other end, you can place many items in white shades and create a color splash by inserting items in bright colors, such as yellow.

Use personal items

We have mentioned several times the fact that the decoration of a room should reflect the personal style of its owner. By choosing items with personal and emotional significance, such as souvenirs, photo frames, etc. you can directly bring your style to the room.

Of course, you don’t need to use only objects that remind you of the past. It can be an item or a work of art that you love and expresses your personal aesthetic.

We tell our story through the objects we choose to have around us. This is how we can create a space that is truly and essentially ours.

Shelves with Wallpaper or Paint

A new and modern option, which we have come across a lot recently, is the placement of wallpaper or paint, either inside the shelves or on the shelves themselves.

This gives us the option to play with more special colors, in addition to the simple brown, black, and white shelves that we encounter again and again. You can give a pop of color to a neutral space or create a completely monochromatic look by painting the shelves, the same color as the wall. By adding color you can easily draw attention to your decorations.

Add greenery

I have mentioned the value of plants many times, as they can liven up the space.

Choose durable indoor plants, such as succulents, and place them in small stylish pots. Make sure your shelves can support the weight of the plants you have chosen.

I would suggest avoiding watering your plants on the shelves. Especially if your shelves are made of wood. Water them on your balcony, give them some time to dry, and put them back on the shelves.

I hope you found those hints useful. Whatever way you choose to decorate your shelves, have fun while you do it and let your imagination run wild.
